چکیده

abstraCt Background and Purpose: At 7T MRI, T2*-weighted (T2*-w) gradient-echo has been shown to provide high-resolution anatomical images of gray matter (GM) lesions. However, few studies have verified T2* lesions histopathologically, or compared them with more standard techniques at ultra-high field-strength. This study aims to determine the sensitivity of T2-w and T2*-w sequences for detecting cortical GM lesions in MS.

Detecting multiple sclerosis cortical lesions post-mortem using 7 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction: Although originally considered a white matter (WM) disease, it is now clear that focal cortical grey matter (GM) pathology is an important component of multiple sclerosis (MS). Presently available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques fail in detecting the actual amount of cortical lesions (CLs). The reason for such a failure is twofold: (i) the small size of CLs relative to...

Increased cortical grey matter lesion detection in multiple sclerosis with 7 Tesla MRI : a postmortem verification study 2 . 3 7 T postmortem MRI and histopathology study

The relevance of cortical grey matter pathology in multiple sclerosis has become increasingly recognised over the past decade. Unfortunately, a large part of cortical lesions remain undetected on MRI using standard field strength. In vivo studies have shown improved detection by using higher magnetic field strengths up to 7 T. So far, a systematic histopathological verification of ultrahigh-fie...

Post-mortem MRI-guided sampling of multiple sclerosis brain lesions: increased yield of active demyelinating and (p)reactive lesions.

Macroscopic sampling of multiple sclerosis lesions in the brain tends to find chronic lesions. For a better understanding of the dynamics of the multiple sclerosis disease process, research into new and developing lesions is of great interest. As MRI in vivo effectively demonstrates lesions in multiple sclerosis patients, we have applied it to unfixed post-mortem brain slices to identify abnorm...

Imaging the tip of the iceberg: visualization of cortical lesions in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND Cortical lesions (CLs) occur frequently in multiple sclerosis (MS), but only few CLs are observed on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Why some CLs are visible and others are not is currently unknown. Here, we investigated whether CLs that are visible on conventional MRI differ from MRI-invisible CLs in terms of underlying histopathology and quantitative MRI (qMRI) measu...
